Make UR Own: Atlas Fold Bindings

Make UR Own: Atlas Fold Bindings In-Person

In this workshop we will create two useful and interesting folded book structures, the Vade Mecum and the Never Ending Atlas Fold. A Vade Mecum is a medieval folded book structure that is worn on the hip, like a girdle book. In this hand-sized book, each folio folds outward and down to reveal a much larger writing surface. Used by medieval astrologers, doctors, and others to carry charts and other reference materials, this structure can hide quite a lot of information in a small, portable package. We'll also learn the Never Ending Atlas Fold book, a structure whose simple genius allows you to add pages to the front or back infinitely. Both of these structures represent ways to incorporate large designs on paper into a smaller, more portable housing. No prior experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided by the Book Arts Studio. This workshop is restricted to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students.
